Pangea performed day-to-day
operation of the treatment plants at Weldon Spring Site Remedial Action
Project (WSSRAP). Pangea
personnel operated treatment plants for radiologically and chemically
contaminated water and sludge.
The plants were operated 24 hours per day, seven days a week in two
12-hour shifts. The
supervisors were Levels “A & C” certified operators as tested and
certified by thestate of Missouri, Department of Natural Resources, under
Code 10 CSR 20-9.030. Pangea developed and implemented Site Health and
Safety Plans and maintained regulatory compliance responsibility for each
plant.
The plants were designated as the
Quarry Water Treatment Plant Train 1, the Mobile Sump Water Treatment
System, and the Raffinate Pit Pumping System.
In addition, Pangea operated the site Water Treatment Plant Train
2, a pilot scale Chemical Stabilization and Solidification (CSS) pilot
Plant, and Dredge. The plant throughput volumes ranged from 10 gallons per
minute for the Mobile Sump Water Treatment System to 100 gallons per
minute for the Site Water Treatment Plant Train 1.
The CSS Pilot Plant had a nominal treatment capacity of 3 yd3
per hour. Pangea
personnel were responsible for startup, shutdown, filter backwashing,
sampling, testing, and rinsing. They
also maintained communications with the prime contractor.
Project personnel stability has been a key to the
continuing success of Pangea’s performance on the WSSRAP project.
Initially, Pangea successfully transitioned personnel working from
the previous contract to the WP436 O&M contract.
This transition was a human resource function rather than a
technical challenge, and it was key in maintaining employee stability and
moral, which benefited project performance.
