Pangea was awarded a contract by Alliant Techsystems Inc (ATK) to bulk,
blend, package/re-package, transport, and dispose of 1,200 drums of
waste residues that were stored in two onsite warehouses. The 1,200
drums contained remnants of waste residues and sludge from a process
sewer-cleaning project conducted in the mid-1980s and contained depleted
uranium, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and heavy metals (cadmium,
lead, etc.).
Pangea’s work scope included the bulking and blending of the wastes, the
packaging/ repackaging of the blended wastes into DOT compliant
containers, and the transport and disposal of the wastes to the
Envirocare of Utah radioactive waste disposal site in Clive, Utah.
Following the removal of all wastes, Pangea personnel worked with the
State of Minnesota to permanently close the RCRA storage areas, which
required the decontamination of the structures via a “triple-wash”
method and a final status survey encompassing both radiological and
chemical contaminates. During this project approximately 400,000 lbs of
material was successfully disposed of and the former storages warehouses
were returned to normal use.
