Hazelwood Interim Storage Site (HISS) Waste Pile Removal - Phase I and Phase II

Pangea contracted with ENDE/DEMCO to provide radiological support for transportation of radiological contaminated soils from the Hazelwood Interim Storage Site (HISS) Waste Pile Removal.

Pangea provided health physics support as part of this project.  Support included coordination with an on-site radiological laboratory, performance of radiological measurements, and preparation of waste manifest documentation for rail shipments of the wastes from the St. Louis FUSRAP site to a low-level radiological waste disposal facility located in Clive, Utah. Waste from a supplemental pile was shipped to Envirosafe in Grand View, Idaho.

For the shipments to Envirocare, Pangea used the DOE software program “Low Track.”  Low Track is a low-level radioactive waste inventory management system for preparing the necessary documentation for transportation of the waste in accordance with applicable NRC and DOT regulatory criteria.

The total volume of contaminated soil from Phase I of this project was approximately 22,000 cubic yards.  The primary contaminants were Th-230, U-238, and RA-226.

Phase II of this project began in January 2001.  This included approximately 15,000 cubic yards of radiologically contaminated soils, all of which is to be shipped via rail gondolas to Envirocare.
