Pangea was contracted by Duratek Inc. to provide on-site
representation and radiological waste consulting services for radioactive
wastes located at the bankrupt ATG waste processing facility located in
Richland, Washington. ATG had
filed for bankruptcy, necessitating that the management of the wastes be
assigned to other parties.
The wastes, which originated from the Brookhaven National
Laboratory in Brookhaven, New York, consisted of 1.8 million pounds of
low-level radioactive waste generated from facility decommissioning
activities at that site. Pangea
was responsible for evaluating radiological characterization information
on the various wastes and determining the final disposition. BNL was part
of the Manhattan Project and has since been a major research center for
the U.S. Department of Energy. Wastes
were sorted, segregated and classified for offsite transportation,
processing and disposal. Waste
processing included volume reduction prior to disposal.
Pangea initiated a pilot test that involved sorting and
segregating approximately one thousand pounds of the waste in order to
estimate production rates and scheduling impacts. After successful
completion of the pilot test, the remainder of the wastes was sorted,
segregated, classified, and transported offsite for processing and
disposal. In addition, Pangea verified that the wastes met the waste
disposal facility’s waste acceptance criteria.
Pangea was responsible for overseeing the sorting and
repackaging at the waste processing facility and verifying proper waste
classification and compliance with applicable DOT requirements for
packaging, placarding, and shipping documentation.
Pangea
assisted Duratek in ensuring that BNL generated wastes were properly
managed and disposed to ensure that Brookhaven wastes were properly
managed and disposed to avoid liability and to ensure compliance with
applicable standards and regulations.
